48th Commemoration of July 7 Statement

48th  Commemoration of July 7 Statement
Date: July 7th, 2010

1)On March 2, 1962 General Ne Win violated the 1947 democratic constitution with a staged a coup against Prime Minister U Nu’s Parliamentary Government.
2)The 1962 generation students were openly against military rule.  Ko Thet and Ko Ba Swe Lay who were leaders of Rangoon Student Union led the demonstration in Rangoon Arts and Science University (RASU) compound.  July 7, 1962 was a historic day for Burmese students who fought against the military dictatorship 48 years ago.
3)On that day students were waving fighting Peacock flags and demanding students’ rights and the withdrawal of the military rule.  The regime opened fire on the unarmed student demonstrators who were demonstrating inside the university compound.  More than 100 students were shot dead including on-lookers from the near by dormitories.
4)Students were the only educated group who understood the cruelty of the military dictatorship and the first group to fight against the military rule by sacrificing their lives on that day.  We, IFBNC urge all Burmese nationals not to forget the fallen heroes and to hold memorial services in your communities.
5)The next day on July 8, the regime dynamited the historical Student Union building, which was the anti-colonialist headquarters.  The aim of the action was to cease student movements once and for all.  All Burma Federation Students’ Union has ceased to exist since then.
6)If the military dictatorship still exists in Burma, it will not allow the formation of the student unions.  Student unions have the duty to protect the student rights. We urge the students from Burma to rise up and fight for their rights with the utmost energy and form their unions.
7)We urge workers, peasants and all strata of classes to fights for their rights and form their respected organizations to protect their rights and for their survival.
