Following is a petition letter regarding Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s security to United Nations Security General Ban Ki-moon
To:
His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon
Secretary General
United Nations
Dear Mr. Secretary General:
As supporters of Burma’s democratic leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, we rejoice in the news of her recent freedom. This historic moment would not have been possible without your persistent efforts on her behalf during her captivity; therefore, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to you and your staff.
As your spokesperson has observed upon her release, “It is deeply regrettable that Daw Aung Suu Kyi was effectively excluded from participating in the recent elections.” Consequently, The Lady must now resume her work against great odds in post-election Burma.
It’s unsettling to realize that former members of the repressive military regime, many of whom may have been personally involved in previous attempts to harm and silence her by force, are now unjustly empowered to oversee her protection as officials in the new government.
This raises grave concerns among those of us devoted to her wellbeing and her cause. Therefore, we the undersigned would like to urge you to consider the following measures:
  • Pay Daw Aung San Suu Kyi an official visit at the earliest opportunity to ascertain her immediate needs.
  • Issue a public statement pledging the power of your office to diligently monitor her safety and security and ensure that she is permitted to continue her work without interference from the country’s authorities.
We believe these will go a long way to show your solidarity with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and your dedication to global peace and harmony.
Signed
Human rights defenders
